It is a cast round iron ring worn on the big toe of the right foot. When Jathum (nyatiti player) hits the lower arm of the nyatiti it makes the gara rattle freely, the constant quarter note pulse dictated by the ring marks the beat. It also makes some subtle buzzy sound to the strings throughout the performance.
