About:

Project  title: Fragility of Freedom

Commissioned song title: Wuok

A commissioned work by Skimstone Arts.

The piece is in response to the theme of Fragility of Freedom. The work was performed at A Night of Fear and Freedom as part of Holocaust Memorial Day Events at Newcastle Central Library on Wednesday 24 January 2024, The NewBridge Project on Thursday 25 January 2024 and in Hexham Abbey on Friday 23 of February 2024.

The piece is called Wuok which contemplates the topic fragility of freedom. What happens when freedom of expression, of creation and of social interaction is snatched away? You know about it but it can no longer be a reality.

Those who are relied upon for enforcing can no longer be trusted.

What happens if the relationship you perceive is limited due to where you are or from? How do we respond to it? The solution is within us to stand up and speak up.

On the other hand the notion of freedom is clearly paradoxical. If everyone is free to do whatever they want, they are free to restrict other people's freedom, and hence those people are not free. If this is not allowed, then nobody is truly free after all. A sense of feeling free is felt at home hence its paramount, a voice in my head says home cannot be absolute, is home an illusion? nothing and no one can completely own it. It can’t be physical. Cultural norms, wealth, even laws of the land constrain and circumscribe the choices. Then there is the freedom of others that necessarily limits yours. Freedom starts within. We leave the fear and become the person we are meant to be.  “For me, we set off, we leave” “Nyaka wa wuog, wuok”.

Skimstone Arts has invited Rapasa to further this piece for the Unity Festival.
