Project title: Jopango

Released in 2023, Jopango is an album born from experimental exploration. More than just a body of work, it is a sonic experience designed to reconnect listeners with the history of the nyatiti while fostering a deeper understanding of ourselves and our community.

The project was never originally intended to become an album or even a single song. Instead, it grew naturally from encounters with elders and tradition-keepers in the villages of Western Kenya. As they shared stories of heritage and daily life, their lived experiences profoundly shaped the author’s creative practice. Around this time, the story of Benga music was already gaining momentum, discussed widely by established artists, youth, and institutions. This cultural narrative was documented in Ketebul Music’s landmark 2018 book, Shades of Benga.

Following its initial audio release, Jopango body of work was pressed onto vinyl and CD. Its narrative has since expanded visually through Jopango Visuals, a live-streaming presentation that pairs the music with imagery from the Shades of Benga book alongside reimagined scenes from the project's development.
